We Can Tell You’re Not From Arizona If You Say These 12 Cities Wrong

Published

on

Arizona looks simple on paper—lots of vowels, lots of sunshine—but the city names? Sneaky. Between Spanish influence and local quirks, outsiders don’t stand a chance. Mispronounce even one of these and locals will instantly know you just got here… probably yesterday.

1. Tempe

Looks like: Temp
Actually: TEM-pee
Say “temp” and you’ve officially outed yourself.

2. Prescott

Looks like: Press-COTT
Actually: PRESS-kit
This one is a classic giveaway.

3. Tucson

Looks like: Tuck-son
Actually: TOO-sahn
If you pronounce that “c,” locals will wince.

4. Saguaro

Looks like: Sag-you-are-oh
Actually: Suh-WAR-oh
Yes, like the cactus—and yes, everyone messes it up.

5. Gila Bend

Looks like: GILL-uh
Actually: HEE-luh
That “G” is not doing what you think it is.

6. Casa Grande

Looks like: Cass-uh Grand
Actually: KAH-suh GRAHN-day
Say it the English way and it’s obvious.

7. Huachuca (as in Sierra Vista area)

Looks like: Hoo-uh-CHOO-kuh
Actually: Wah-CHOO-kuh
This one humbles everyone.

8. Mogollon Rim

Looks like: Mog-uh-LON
Actually: Muggy-YOHN
If you’ve never heard it before, good luck.

9. Yuma

Looks like: YUM-uh
Actually: YOO-muh
Subtle—but locals hear the difference.

10. Oro Valley

Looks like: OR-oh
Actually: OR-oh (but smoother, Spanish-style)
It’s not wrong—it’s how stiff you say it.

11. Maricopa

Looks like: Mar-ee-CO-puh
Actually: Mare-ih-CO-puh
That first syllable trips people up every time.

12. Cochise

Looks like: Cock-HEESE
Actually: Ko-CHEES
Yeah… don’t say it the wrong way in public.

If you got through this list without embarrassing yourself, congrats—you might pass as a local at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. If not, don’t worry… Arizona names humble everyone at first. Just remember: it’s not the heat that exposes you—it’s how you say “Prescott.”
