We Can Tell You’re Not From Arkansas If You Say These 12 Cities Wrong

Arkansas is where spelling and pronunciation go their separate ways—and never look back. If you try to sound it out logically, you’ve already lost. Say any of these wrong and locals will clock you instantly… probably before you finish the word.

1. Arkansas (the state itself)

Looks like: Ar-KAN-zus
Actually: AR-kan-saw
Say “Ar-kan-zus” and you’re done before you even start.

2. El Dorado

Looks like: El Dor-AH-do
Actually: El Dor-AY-doh
Not Spanish class—this is Arkansas.

3. Bryant

Looks like: Bry-ant
Actually: BRY-ent
Subtle, but locals hear it immediately.

4. Paragould

Looks like: Para-GOULD
Actually: PAIR-uh-goold
This one trips up just about everyone.

5. Beebe

Looks like: Bee-bee
Actually: BEE-bee
Easy… unless you overthink it (which people do).

6. Ouachita (as in Ouachita Mountains)

Looks like: Ooh-ah-CHEE-tuh
Actually: WASH-uh-taw
Yeah… good luck if you’ve never heard it before.

7. Saline (County)

Looks like: Say-line
Actually: Suh-LEEN
Locals will absolutely notice this one.

8. Nevada (the town, not the state)

Looks like: Neh-VAH-duh
Actually: Nuh-VAY-duh
Say it like the state and you’re exposed.

9. Lavaca

Looks like: Lah-VAH-kuh
Actually: Luh-VAY-kuh
That middle syllable is the trap.

10. Cairo

Looks like: KAI-ro
Actually: KAY-ro
Different continent, different pronunciation.

11. Fouke

Looks like: Fowk
Actually: FOOK
Yes, it’s exactly how you think… and people still hesitate.

12. Booneville

Looks like: Boone-VILLE
Actually: BOON-vuhl
That “ville” gets flattened real quick.

If you got all of these right, you might actually blend in at a small-town gas station. If not, don’t worry—Arkansas pronunciation isn’t something you guess, it’s something you survive. Just remember: down here, it’s not about spelling… it’s about knowing better.
