California Is Home To Many Beautiful Churches

California’s churches and missions are so much more than just historic landmarks. They’re like stepping into a piece of the past. Each one tells its own story, with details that range from intricate hand-painted ceilings to centuries-old bells still ringing. Here are some of the most beautiful churches in the state.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

You’ll find Mission San Juan Capistrano in downtown San Juan Capistrano. Visiting the gardens or checking out the ruins of the Great Stone Church this time of the year will make you feel calm and peaceful. The Serra Chapel may be small but has this old-world charm. Its painted beams on the ceiling are worth looking at.

Grace Cathedral

You’ll need extra effort to reach Grace Cathedral at the top of San Francisco’s Nob Hill, but the hike will be worth it. On certain nights in December, the cathedral becomes more festive with Christmas-themed concerts and special Christmas mass services. While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on walking around the outdoor labyrinth.

Mission Santa Barbara

Mission Santa Barbara, known as the “Queen of the missions” for its unmatched beauty, stands out against the Santa Inez Mountains backdrop. A visit during the last month of the year allows you to enjoy the place in more favorable weather.

It is also a treat to observe the centuries-old olive trees all over the mission. These trees were brought by the Franciscan priests in Santa Barbara in 1786.

Christ Cathedral

Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove is one of those places that combine contemporary and classic vibes. Formerly called the Crystal Cathedral, the whole building is glass.

Nativity displays deck the cathedral in December. If you are into music, try to catch an organ service, when the church uses the fifth largest organ in the world.

While special Christmas services take place in the cathedral during the holiday season, you can catch other mass services throughout the year.

Mission San Luis Obispo

Mission San Luis Obispo feels secluded, even though it is right downtown. You’ll appreciate the notable adobe walls around the church, giving it additional charm.

This church is different from others because of its L-shaped structure. It also has a combination of belfry and vestibule that you won’t find in other California missions.

Los Angeles Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels may look huge and modern, but it possesses this calm energy that makes you feel relaxed. You can expect to see nativity decorations within the area during the Christmas season. You’ll also experience special holiday mass and events on certain days of the month.

Mission San Diego de Alcalá

Mission San Diego de Alcalá is California’s first mission founded by Saint Junípero Serraon July 16, 1769. The white stucco walls and simple bell tower pop out against the blue sky of December. You can explore the mission’s small museum, where you’ll learn the history of the area.

Mission Dolores

Mission Dolores may be the oldest building in San Francisco, but it won’t stop you from appreciating its beauty. The wooden altar is hand-carved and shipped from Mexico in 1776, and the painted ceiling feels like taken from a history book. You’ll also see a cemetery outside where you will find some of the city’s earliest graves.

Old Mission Santa Inés

Mission Santa Inés sits on a hill overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley, and you’ll have an unobstructed view this time of the year. It has a small mission museum where you’ll see cool artifacts like old tools and traditional clothing. The town of Solvang is nearby. During the holidays, the whole town sparkles with festive lights.

San Gabriel Mission

You’d find San Gabriel Mission as a fortress with its thick walls and narrow windows. The church closed its doors in 2020 after a fire, but you can now visit it after it reopened in July 2023. As you roam around the grounds, you’ll be treated to the energizing smell of the citrus trees in the church garden.

Holy Cross Church

Holy Cross Church lies on a hill in Santa Cruz with a clear view of the ocean. It has a simple building, but the area itself is exceptional since it is where the original Mission Santa Cruz used to exist.
