12 Phrases You’ll Only Understand If You Live in California

California isn’t just a state—it’s a whole vibe with avocado toast on top. From foggy NorCal forests to sunbaked SoCal beaches, the Golden State has its own language that outsiders find both fascinating and deeply confusing. If you’ve ever debated In-N-Out secret menu items or scheduled your life around freeway traffic, you’re probably fluent in Californian already.

1. “The 405 was a parking lot.”

Not an exaggeration. You could knit a sweater during your commute.

2. “Let’s take PCH.”

Translation: We’re about to take the most scenic—and slowest—route imaginable. For the aesthetic, obviously.

3. “I need to charge my Tesla.”

The modern-day equivalent of “I need to get gas,” but said with smug environmental superiority.

4. “It’s earthquake weather.”

No one knows what this means, but we say it every time it’s weirdly hot and still.

5. “Where’s the best poke bowl near me?”

Said into your phone at least twice a week.

6. “I can’t, Mercury’s in retrograde.”

Astrology is a totally valid reason for canceling plans or making terrible decisions.

7. “I was in line behind Zendaya at Erewhon.”

Totally casual name-drop, totally believable. Especially in L.A.

8. “It’s only $3,500 for a studio in Echo Park!”

Said with way too much excitement for something that doesn’t include a closet or air conditioning.

9. “I grew up in NorCal, but I live in SoCal now.”

This is important context. Prepare for unsolicited opinions about which is superior.

10. “Dude, the mountain’s dumping right now.”

Not gross—just snowboarder speak for fresh powder in Tahoe or Mammoth.

11. “We don’t do seasons.”

California has two modes: fire and drought. Occasionally, “mudslide.”

12. “Is this gluten-free, organic, and sustainably sourced?”

This question is asked at every meal. Including gas station snacks.

If these made perfect sense, congratulations—you’ve survived L.A. traffic, wildfire season, and probably have a favorite taco truck. If not, don’t worry. Spend a week in California and you’ll be casually talking about kombucha, chakras, and rent prices like the rest of us. Just remember: flip-flops are year-round, and yes, that avocado toast really is $16.a
