Hidden in the Marin Headlands, Nike Missile Site SF-88 stood ready to blast Soviet bombers from the sky. Here’s an inside look at the Bay Area’s atomic defense system.

The Last Line of Defense Against Soviet Bombers

When the Cold War intensified in the early 1950s, the United States Army desperately needed a way to protect American cities from Soviet bomber attacks.

Construction of Nike Missile Site SF-88 began in July 1954 at Fort Barry in the Marin Headlands, creating a shield against potential Soviet bombers targeting San Francisco’s vital military installations and civilian population.

The site was part of the extensive Project Nike defense system, America’s first operational anti-aircraft missile program designed by Bell Laboratories after World War II.

While most Nike sites across America were demolished or repurposed following deactivation, the Army agreed to transfer SF-88 to the newly formed Golden Gate National Recreation Area for preservation as a historic site.

Saved From Demolition By Historical Agreement

In the early 1980s, a local chapter of the Military Vehicles Collectors Club began restoration efforts, pumping water from the flooded underground missile magazine and salvaging equipment.

Retired Colonel Bud Halsey led volunteer restoration teams through the mid-1980s.

By the early 1990s, the dedicated restoration teams had recovered enough original equipment and documentation to recreate the operational appearance of SF-88, making it the only fully restored Nike missile site in the United States.

Nike Missile Site SF-88 is located in the Marin Headlands section of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, approximately five miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge via Bunker Road.

The site is typically open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM, with guided tours departing every 45 minute.
