The Remote Air Base Where Chuck Yeager Broke the Sound Barrier in 14 Seconds

Most people thought it was impossible. Flying faster than sound would tear a plane apart, they said. Chuck Yeager proved them wrong in 1947 at what’s now Edwards Air Force Base. Here’s what happened at this historic California landmark.

The Bell X-1

The Bell X-1 was built to break the sound barrier. Engineers shaped it like a .50-caliber bullet because bullets already flew faster than sound without becoming unstable.

The aircraft stretched just 30.9 feet with a 28-foot wingspan. Its four-chambered XLR-11 rocket engine burned alcohol and liquid oxygen to produce 6,000 pounds of thrust.

Chuck Yeager named it “Glamorous Glennis” after his wife, continuing his tradition of naming his planes after her. Workers painted the X-1 bright orange so spotters could easily track it during tests against the blue sky and brown desert.

Captain Chuck Yeager’s Selection

Colonel Albert Boyd picked 24-year-old Captain Chuck Yeager to fly the X-1. He made this choice after Bell test pilot Chalmers Goodlin demanded $150,000 for the mission.

The Army Air Forces took over the test program from Bell Aircraft in June 1947. Yeager would fly for just his regular military pay.

Yeager brought impressive skills as a World War II fighter ace with 11.5 enemy planes shot down. His perfect 20/10 eyesight and calm under pressure made him ideal.

The X-1 Test Flight Program

The X-1 made its first glide flight in January 1946 at Pinecastle Field, Florida. Bell test pilot Jack Woolams flew this unpowered test to check basic handling.

The program moved to Muroc Army Air Field for rocket-powered tests. The open desert offered safer conditions for risky experiments.

Chalmers Goodlin flew the first powered X-1 flight in December 1946, reaching Mach 0.79 – still slower than sound. Yeager first flew the X-1 in August 1947.

By October, he had completed eight powered flights, with the eighth reaching Mach 0.997, just shy of breaking the sound barrier.

The Night Before The Historic Flight

On October 13, 1947, Yeager went horseback riding with his wife after dinner at Pancho Barnes’ Fly Inn Ranch. Racing back in darkness, Yeager’s horse stopped at a closed gate, but Yeager kept going.

He broke two ribs on his right side in the fall. This injury threatened to cancel his flight scheduled for the next day. Military doctors would ground him if they knew.

Instead, Yeager visited a local doctor in Rosamond who taped his ribs without asking questions. Only his wife and engineer Jack Ridley knew about his injury.

The Broom Handle Solution

Broken ribs meant Yeager couldn’t use his right arm to close the X-1’s heavy cockpit hatch. Jack Ridley, an engineer with a Caltech degree, found a simple answer.

He cut off a broom handle from the maintenance closet. This wooden stick gave Yeager enough leverage to close the hatch with his good left arm.

When Yeager arrived at the hangar on October 14, the team jokingly gave him a carrot, glasses, and rope. Their teasing about his “horse disagreement” lightened the mood before the dangerous flight.

The B-29 Mothership Launch

A modified B-29 bomber carried the X-1 on the morning of October 14. This huge plane held the rocket craft in its bomb bay.

Major Bob Cardenas flew the B-29 while Jack Ridley joined as flight engineer. His help proved vital given Yeager’s hidden injury.

The bomber climbed to 25,000 feet over Rogers Dry Lake. Thin air at this height created better conditions for the supersonic attempt.

Yeager had to crawl from the B-29 into the X-1 through the bomb bay in flight. With broken ribs, this painful maneuver tested his determination.

The Moment Of Launch

The B-29 released the X-1 at 20,000 feet. The bright orange plane dropped free into clear air. Yeager fired the rocket engines in sequence.

Sudden acceleration pushed him back as the X-1 shot upward. Richard Frost flew a P-80 Shooting Star as “low chase” to observe from below.

Bob Hoover piloted the “high chase” aircraft, ready to radio emergency instructions if needed. The X-1 climbed steeply toward 40,000 feet. Timing was crucial as the rocket burned fuel rapidly.

Breaking The Sound Barrier

At 43,000 feet, Yeager’s Machmeter jumped from Mach 0.965 to Mach 1.06. The X-1 had crossed the sound barrier.

The aircraft hit 700 miles per hour, faster than sound travels at that altitude. Yeager entered airspace no human had known before.

The transition happened smoothly without the violent shaking many engineers feared. The X-1’s special design worked perfectly.

Yeager radioed Ridley: “Hey Ridley, make another note. There’s something wrong with this Machmeter. It’s gone off the scale.” Both men knew history had just been made.

The Sonic Boom

A loud crack rolled across the desert as the X-1 broke the sound barrier. This sonic boom was the first ever created by humans.

When an object flies faster than sound, pressure waves stack up and create this distinctive noise. Sound waves that normally travel ahead get compressed.

Ground controllers heard the boom, confirming what instruments already showed. Their ears told them Yeager had succeeded.

After 18 seconds at supersonic speed, Yeager cut power. He had proven his point and needed to save fuel for the glide back to Earth.

The Aftermath And Recognition

This achievement stayed secret until Aviation Week magazine broke the story in December 1947. The Air Force finally announced it on June 10, 1948, eight months after it happened.

This delay allowed more research without pressure from the public or Soviets. Three men shared the prestigious Collier Trophy in 1948: Yeager as pilot, Bell Aircraft president Larry Bell, and engineer John Stack.

President Harry Truman presented the award at the White House. Yeager also received the Mackay Trophy that year for his historic flight.
