We Can Tell You’re Not From Delaware If You Say These 12 Cities Wrong

Delaware may be small, but its place names will absolutely expose you. Between colonial leftovers and local shortcuts, nothing is pronounced quite how you expect. Say even one of these wrong and locals will know you crossed state lines five minutes ago.

1. Newark

Looks like: New-ARK
Actually: NEW-ark
Stress the second syllable and you’re instantly spotted.

2. Lewes

Looks like: LOO-iss
Actually: LOO-iss (but said quick, almost like one syllable)
It’s not “loose”—and locals will correct you fast.

3. Smyrna

Looks like: SMY-ur-nuh
Actually: SMUR-nuh
That middle sound trips up just about everyone.

4. Dover

Looks like: DOH-ver
Actually: DOH-ver (but flatter, faster)
Over-pronounce it and you sound like a tourist guide.

5. Rehoboth Beach

Looks like: Reh-HO-both
Actually: Ruh-HO-buth
Say “both” like normal and locals will wince.

6. Odessa

Looks like: Oh-DESS-uh
Actually: Oh-DESS-uh (but locals keep it quick and clipped)
Drag it out and you’re not fooling anyone.

7. Hockessin

Looks like: Hock-ESS-in
Actually: HO-keh-sin
This one is a dead giveaway.

8. Bethany Beach

Looks like: Beth-ANN-ee
Actually: Buh-THAN-ee
Subtle—but locals hear it immediately.

9. Seaford

Looks like: See-FORD
Actually: SEE-ford
Get the stress wrong and it’s obvious.

10. Millsboro

Looks like: Mills-BOR-oh
Actually: Mills-BUR-oh
That middle vowel matters more than you think.

11. Delmar

Looks like: Del-MAR
Actually: DEL-mar
Flip the stress and you’ve given yourself away.

12. Wyoming (the town, not the state)

Looks like: Why-OH-ming
Actually: Why-OH-ming (but locals say it fast and flat)
It’s not wrong—it’s how polished you say it.

If you got all of these right, you might just pass as someone who’s been here longer than a weekend. If not, don’t worry—Delaware’s got a quiet way of humbling people. Just remember: in the First State, it’s not the size that gives you away… it’s the pronunciation.
