It’s not all roller coasters here

Orlando drew 75.3 million visitors in 2024, more than any other destination in the country. You probably know it as the Theme Park Capital of the World, and that reputation is earned.

But this central Florida city also sits among hundreds of lakes and wetlands, with natural springs, botanical gardens, wildlife preserves, and a downtown that has a life of its own. The theme parks get top billing.

What surrounds them is worth the trip on its own.

Fort Gatlin started it all in 1838

Orlando’s roots go back to the Second Seminole War.

The U.S. Army built Fort Gatlin in 1838 to protect settlers, and a small community called Jernigan grew up around it, named after early settler Aaron Jernigan.

By 1875, the town incorporated as Orlando with just 85 residents.

The name likely came from Judge James Gamble Speer, who may have borrowed it from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.”

Orlando soon became the hub of Florida’s citrus trade, until the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 wiped out the smaller groves.

Walt Disney World covers the same ground as San Francisco

When Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, about 20 miles southwest of downtown, it rewired the entire region. The resort sprawls across roughly 25,000 acres, about the size of San Francisco.

Four theme parks fill that space: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Magic Kingdom alone pulled in about 17.7 million visitors in 2024, making it the most visited theme park on the planet.

Around 77,000 cast members keep it all running, the largest single-site workforce in the country.

Universal’s newest park took 25 years to arrive

Universal Epic Universe opened on May 22, 2025, the first major new theme park in Orlando in a quarter century.

It sits on a 750-acre development south of Universal’s original campus and packs in five themed worlds: Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon Isle of Berk, and Dark Universe.

Combined with Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay, you now have four parks to work through in one resort.

Swim in 68-degree springs 35 minutes from downtown

Some of central Florida’s clearest water sits less than an hour from the tourist corridor.

Rock Springs at Kelly Park, about 35 minutes north of downtown, feeds a free-flowing current that holds around 68 degrees all year. You can rent a tube and float the run.

Wekiwa Springs State Park is about 40 minutes out, with swimming, kayak rentals, and 25 miles of hiking trails through subtropical forest.

The Wekiva River running through it is one of only two National Wild and Scenic Rivers in all of Florida.

Manatees at Blue Spring State Park, FL

Hundreds of manatees crowd one spring every winter

Blue Spring State Park, about an hour north of Orlando, draws hundreds of manatees between mid-November and March.

They come for the warmer spring water, and you can watch them from boardwalks and trails along the spring run. Swimming shuts down during manatee season, but the viewing alone is worth the drive.

If you keep going north, about 90 minutes out, Silver Springs State Park has glass-bottom boat tours that have been running for over a century.

The water is so clear you can see straight to the bottom from the boat.

Gatorland still has its original gator-jaw entrance from 1949

Gatorland opened in 1949 when Owen Godwin founded it, and his family still runs it today. The 110-acre park calls itself the Alligator Capital of the World, and the famous gator-jaw entrance backs that up.

Owen’s youngest son, Frank, designed it and painted it in his father’s favorite colors, Florida aqua and white. You’ll find thousands of alligators and crocodiles inside, including rare leucistic white alligators.

The park also takes in nuisance gators from across the state that would otherwise be put down.

Fifty acres of exotic plants collected from around the globe

Harry P. Leu Gardens sits on nearly 50 acres just minutes from downtown Orlando.

Harry and Mary Jane Leu bought the property in 1936 and spent decades hauling back exotic plants from their travels worldwide. They donated the whole thing, gardens and home, to the City of Orlando in 1961.

You can walk through more than 40 plant collections, including Florida’s largest formal rose garden and one of the finest camellia collections in the country.

The Leu House Museum sits at the center of the grounds and holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lake Eola Park anchors downtown Orlando, where you can rent swan-shaped pedal boats and loop a paved path around the water.

Walk east from the lake and you hit Thornton Park, a neighborhood with brick-lined streets and local restaurants.

About 20 minutes north, Winter Park runs a scenic boat tour through a chain of lakes connected by narrow canals.

If you want to dig into the area’s past, the Orange County Regional History Center is a Smithsonian affiliate inside a 1927 five-story courthouse, covering 12,000 years of Central Florida history.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex sits about 45 minutes east of Orlando on Merritt Island. You walk right up to Space Shuttle Atlantis, close enough to see the heat tiles.

A bus tour takes you through NASA’s launch facilities, and you can meet veteran astronauts on-site.

The complex also has IMAX films, interactive simulators, and a rocket garden full of historic spacecraft from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.

If the timing works out, you might catch an actual rocket launch from the viewing areas.

A new indoor coaster, a dark ride, and Blue Man Group

Orlando keeps adding to the lineup. EPCOT plans to debut a Soarin’ Across America film over Memorial Day Weekend 2026, timed to the country’s 250th anniversary.

SeaWorld Orlando is building SEAQuest: Legends of the Deep, a suspended family dark ride. LEGOLAND Florida launched Galacticoaster, the park’s first indoor roller coaster, in early 2026.

Blue Man Group returned to Orlando on May 1, 2026, with a new custom-built theater at ICON Park. All told, the city adds more than two dozen new experiences across its parks and attractions every year.

The springs and gardens make the second trip worth it

Orlando’s subtropical climate gives you warm weather and outdoor access all year.

You can tube down a natural spring in the morning, watch manatees from a boardwalk after lunch, and walk through 50 acres of gardens before dinner.

The theme parks pull you in the first time, but the natural springs, the wildlife, the space center, and the downtown neighborhoods are what round out the trip. Most people come for the castles and coasters.

What they find beyond them is what brings them back.

Explore Orlando’s parks and springs from central Florida

You can reach just about everything in the Orlando area from the International Drive corridor. Orlando International Airport (MCO) connects to cities across the country with direct flights, so getting in is easy.

The theme parks sit within a short drive of I-Drive, and the natural springs, state parks, and day-trip spots like Kennedy Space Center are all within 45 to 90 minutes by car. Give yourself a few extra days beyond the parks.

The springs and gardens alone are worth the time.
