12 Sayings You’ll Only Hear (and Understand) in Hawaii

Hawaiʻi doesn’t just have its own time zone — it has its own rhythm, its own slang, and its own way of seeing the world. Words here carry culture, history, and a deep connection to the land and ocean. If you understand these without needing a translation, you’re either kamaʻāina… or you’ve been paying close attention.

1. “Aloha.”

It means hello, goodbye, love, compassion, and more. It’s not just a greeting — it’s a way of life.

2. “Mahalo.”

Thank you — but with heart. You’ll see it everywhere from local shops to road signs.

3. “Da kine.”

The ultimate placeholder phrase. It can mean anything… and locals somehow always know exactly what you mean.

4. “Talk story.”

To hang out and chat. No rush. No agenda.

5. “Pau.”

Finished. Done. Over. Work pau? Time for the beach.

6. “Grindz.”

Local food. The good kind. Plate lunch, poke, loco moco — serious grindz.

7. “Shoots.”

Okay. Sounds good. See you later. It covers a lot of ground.

8. “Kamaʻāina.”

A local resident. Not just someone visiting — someone who belongs.

9. “Haole.”

Traditionally meaning foreigner. Context and tone matter here.

10. “ʻOhana.”

Family — by blood or by bond. And yes, it runs deep.

11. “Makāi / Mauka.”

Directions based on the land: toward the ocean (makāi) or toward the mountains (mauka). No north/south needed.

12. “Island time.”

Things move a little slower. And that’s the point.

Hawaiʻi sayings aren’t trends — they’re rooted in culture and community. They reflect respect for the land, the ocean, and the people who call the islands home. And if you naturally give a shaka while saying “Shoots, pau work”… you’re moving with aloha. 🌺
