Iolani Palace is not just any old building. It’s a symbol of the island’s unique history and royal heritage!
The palace was built in 1882 by King Kalakaua and was the official residence of the Hawaiian monarchy until the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893. Walk through its grand halls, and feel the presence of the royals who once called this place home!
King Kalakaua was once known as the “Merrie Monarch” for his love of music and dance. You can bet that he spared no expense in making the palace a marvel of its time. It was the first building in Hawaii to have electricity, telephones, and indoor plumbing—pretty cutting-edge for the 19th century!

The exterior of the palace already screams opulence, but wait ’til you see the interiors! It’s certainly as majestic. The grand staircase, made of Hawaiian koa wood, greets you with a warm, rich glow. As you wander through the staterooms, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful artifacts, intricate furniture, and portraits of Hawaiian royalty.

The Throne Room is particularly striking, with its crimson and gold décor. It’s easy to imagine grand ceremonies and receptions taking place here, with the king and queen presiding over their court.

The room even has the original thrones and royal regalia on display. It’s amazing!

Upstairs, the private suites of King Kalakaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, offer a more intimate glimpse into royal life. The former King’s suite has a combination of Hawaiian, American, Asian, and European furnishings.

On the other hand, the former Queen’s suite has distinctive mahogany furniture and red curtains and upholstery.
Note: The pieces in the suites were sold in auctions held after the King’s death and the overthrow of the monarchy. These items are still widely sought after up to this day.

The palace grounds are equally enchanting, with lush gardens, towering palm trees, and historic buildings like the Coronation Pavilion. This pavilion was used for the coronation ceremonies of both King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani.
Back in the day, you can just imagine the royal family taking a stroll with the abundance of spots to sit and soak in the serene atmosphere. The Banyan Tree Courtyard, with its massive, sprawling banyan tree, is a favorite spot for visitors to relax and reflect.

If you want to visit the palace, you can! There are different tour options available: the Guided Tour with Palace Docent, and a Self-Led Audio Tour. Both tours will take you through the first and second floors. After that, you can also explore the basement gallery exhibits!
Just remember that tickets are strictly sold only. You cannot come in there for a walk-in fee, and the same-day reservation is also not allowed.
