If You Don’t Know These 15 Words, You’re Definitely Not from Indiana

Indiana isn’t just a place on a map—it’s a way of life involving basketball, cornfields, and an extremely personal relationship with road construction. We speak a language outsiders might not understand, but Hoosiers do. If you’re scratching your head, we’ll know you’re probably from Ohio… or worse, Illinois.

These words are woven into our small-town festivals, gas station coffee chats, and endless conversations about the weather. Learn them, love them, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll let you merge on I-465 without passive-aggressive honking.

1. Hoosier

Our nickname. No, we don’t know exactly where it came from. Yes, we’re weirdly proud of it.

2. The 500

Short for the Indianapolis 500, the greatest spectacle in racing. If you don’t own at least one checkered flag, you’re not from here.

3. The Circle

Locals know this refers to Monument Circle in downtown Indy—not some random roundabout in the suburbs.

4. Purdue vs. IU

The rivalry that divides families and ruins Thanksgivings. Choose wisely.

5. Tenderloin

No, not the fancy cut of steak. We’re talking about a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich bigger than your head.

6. Cornhole

A sacred summer game played at tailgates, backyard BBQs, and family reunions. Outsiders think it’s just bean bags. They’re wrong.

7. Lake Effect Snow

Especially if you’re up north. One minute it’s sunny, the next your car is buried in a snowdrift.

8. B-Town

That’s Bloomington—home of IU and more red than a barn in July.

9. Boilermakers

Purdue people. Also a drink. But mainly, Purdue people.

10. The Region

Northwest Indiana folks will let you know they’re basically from Chicago… but not quite.

11. Covered Bridge Festival

Only in Indiana can we make an entire festival out of rustic bridges—and make it a big deal.

12. Upland

Not just a town, but a nod to the craft beer scene. If you know, you know.

13. Rural King

Our unofficial shopping mall. Where else can you get boots, baby chicks, and a tractor in one trip?

14. Krogering

Going to Kroger. It’s a verb. Don’t question it.

15. Snowmageddon

Every winter storm. Every year. Every panic-bought gallon of milk and loaf of bread.

Indiana’s language is as warm as a bonfire in October and as loud as a high school basketball gym on a Friday night. If you didn’t flinch at the mention of “The Region,” you might just pass as one of us.

We’ve got race cars, cornfields, and rivalries, but most of all—we’ve got pride. So learn the lingo, grab a tenderloin sandwich, and don’t you dare call it “soda.”
