If You Understand These 14 Slang Terms, You’re Definitely from New Jersey

If you’ve ever argued about the best diner, said “New Joisey” only ironically, or refused to pump your own gas on principle, you’re definitely from New Jersey. The Garden State has a language all its own—fast-talking, attitude-heavy, and filled with pride that outsiders mistake for aggression. Whether you’re from North Jersey, South Jersey, or that mysterious “Central Jersey,” you know Jersey life is loud, loyal, and built on sarcasm and bagels.

So grab a Taylor ham (or pork roll) sandwich, honk twice, and see if you’re fluent in true Jersey.

1. The Parkway

Translation: The Garden State Parkway—a toll road, traffic nightmare, and lifeline all in one.
Example: “We’re takin’ the Parkway down the Shore—if it’s not backed up.”

2. The Turnpike

Translation: The New Jersey Turnpike—home to rest stops, bad drivers, and existential despair.
Example: “Took the Turnpike again—should’ve packed lunch and patience.”

3. The Shore

Translation: The beach, but with better food, louder music, and more personality.
Example: “We’re goin’ down the Shore this weekend—Seaside, baby.”

4. Jughandle

Translation: The bizarre traffic feature that forces you to turn right to go left.
Example: “Missed the jughandle again—guess we’re goin’ to Delaware.”

5. Benny / Shoobie

Translation: Tourists who invade the Jersey Shore every summer—loved for their money, not their manners.
Example: “The Bennies are back—hide the Wawa.”

6. Taylor Ham / Pork Roll

Translation: The state’s eternal civil war—North says “Taylor Ham,” South says “Pork Roll.”
Example: “It’s Taylor Ham, and I will die on this hill.”

7. Wawa

Translation: The greatest convenience store known to man. Coffee, hoagies, and happiness in one stop.
Example: “Meet me at Wawa—I’ll grab us some hoagies and a Monster.”

8. Diner Capital

Translation: New Jersey’s proudest title—home to more diners per capita than anywhere else.
Example: “It’s 2 a.m.—which diner we hittin’?”

9. Brick City

Translation: Newark’s nickname—tough, proud, and full of history.
Example: “Brick City raised me—don’t mess with Newark.”

10. Exit Number

Translation: How New Jerseyans give directions—because exits mean more than town names.
Example: “Oh, you’re from Exit 117? Nice, I’m Exit 9.”

11. Shoobie Season

Translation: Summer—when the Shore fills with sunburned outsiders and road rage.
Example: “It’s shoobie season—time to find a private beach.”

12. Disco Fries

Translation: French fries smothered in gravy and melted mozzarella—New Jersey’s answer to poutine.
Example: “Got disco fries from the diner—life-changing, bro.”

13. The City

Translation: New York City, obviously.
Example: “We’re takin’ the train into The City for the weekend.”

14. Forget About It (Fuhgeddaboudit)

Translation: The all-purpose phrase for “don’t worry about it,” “no way,” or “yeah, right.”
Example: “You think the Turnpike’ll be clear at 5 p.m.? Fuhgeddaboudit.”

If all this sounds familiar, you’re Jersey through and through. You’ve mastered the jughandle, got a diner order memorized, and know your exit by heart. You live fast, talk faster, and defend your state like family—because deep down, you know the truth: no one does attitude, loyalty, or breakfast sandwiches like New Jersey.
