Only People From New Jersey Know What These 12 Slang Terms Actually Mean

Living in New Jersey means defending your state from stereotypes 24/7 while secretly knowing most outsiders couldn’t survive driving there for more than ten minutes. It’s a place where diners are sacred, beach traffic is inevitable, and everybody somehow talks a little louder than necessary. Somewhere between the Turnpike, the Shore, and fierce pizza debates, New Jersey locals developed slang that outsiders usually have absolutely no clue how to interpret.

1. “The Shore”

Locals don’t say “the beach.” They say they’re going “down the shore.”
Example: “We’re heading down the shore this weekend.”

2. “Taylor Ham” vs. “Pork Roll”

The single fastest way to start an argument in New Jersey. North Jersey says Taylor Ham, South Jersey says pork roll.
Example: “It’s Taylor Ham and I refuse to debate this further.”

3. “Jughandle”

A bizarre traffic feature that confuses every out-of-state driver immediately.
Example: “Miss the jughandle and you’re adding twenty minutes.”

4. “The Parkway”

Locals instantly know this means the Garden State Parkway.
Example: “Traffic on the Parkway is brutal today.”

5. “Benny”

A nickname locals use for certain out-of-state beach tourists flooding the shore towns every summer.
Example: “The bennys showed up early this year.”

6. “The Turnpike”

Another road locals discuss like it’s a living being.
Example: “Avoid the Turnpike unless you enjoy brake lights.”

7. “Wawa Run”

A quick trip to Wawa for snacks, coffee, or emotional support food.
Example: “I’m making a Wawa run, you need anything?”

8. “Down the Block”

In New Jersey, this could mean five houses away or three towns over.
Example: “The pizza place is right down the block.”

9. “The City”

Depending on where you are, this usually means New York City or sometimes Philadelphia.
Example: “We’re going into the city tonight.”

10. “Disco Fries”

New Jersey diner fries covered in gravy and melted cheese. Basically a local delicacy.
Example: “Nothing hits harder at 1 a.m. than disco fries.”

11. “No Left Turn”

A phrase New Jersey drivers see so often they’ve adapted their entire personalities around it.
Example: “There’s never a left turn where you actually need one.”

12. “Jersey Strong”

A phrase locals use proudly after storms, hardships, or whenever somebody insults the state online.
Example: “People talk trash until they see how Jersey Strong everyone is.”

New Jersey slang is fast, loud, and fueled almost entirely by traffic frustration, diner food, and regional pride. Outsiders may joke about the state, but locals know New Jersey has some of the best food, beaches, and personalities in the country. And honestly, if you’ve ever argued about Taylor Ham while sitting in Parkway traffic after a Wawa run, you’re officially from Jersey.
