12 Sayings You’ll Only Hear (and Understand) in New York

New York doesn’t whisper — it announces. It’s subway delays, upstate debates, pizza opinions that could start wars, and a pace that doesn’t wait for anyone. If you understand these without explanation, you’ve probably walked fast enough to scare a tourist.

1. “The City.”

No explanation needed. Manhattan. Always Manhattan.

2. “Upstate.”

If you’re from NYC, it means anywhere north of the Bronx. If you’re actually from upstate, you have feelings about that.

3. “I’m walkin’ here!”

Not always yelled — but spiritually present at all times.

4. “The subway’s delayed.”

Of course it is. Plan accordingly.

5. “Bodega.”

Not just a convenience store. It’s community, coffee, and a cat.

6. “Forget about it.”

Could mean never mind. Could mean incredible. Context is everything.

7. “The Thruway.”

If you’re driving north, you’re probably on it.

8. “It’s brick.”

It’s cold. Like, aggressively cold.

9. “The Boroughs.”

And yes, each one has a personality.

10. “Corner slice.”

If you know, you know.

11. “Strong Island.”

Long Island pride — said with volume.

12. “Deadass.”

Completely serious. No exaggeration.

New York sayings aren’t subtle — they’re efficient. They reflect fast mornings, loud opinions, lake-effect snow upstate, and a statewide belief that nowhere else quite compares. And if you instinctively roll your eyes when someone walks too slow… you’re home.
