Asheville, North Carolina, United States - October 20, 2022: Biltmore Estate, Large white mansion with a lush green lawn in front of it. The mansion has a grand entrance with columns and a balcony.

Biltmore’s 8,000 acres are just the beginning

Asheville, North Carolina, has a lot going for it, but nothing else in town comes close to Biltmore Estate.

A 250-room French Renaissance chateau sits at the center of 8,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a few minutes from downtown.

More than a million people make the trip each year, and when you finally stand in front of it, you’ll understand why. There’s a lot behind those walls, and most of it you won’t see coming.

A Vanderbilt grandson turned a mountain retreat into a legacy

George Vanderbilt first came to the Asheville area in the 1880s and kept coming back. He bought 125,000 acres, hired the top architect and landscape designer of the era, and set them loose.

Architect Richard Morris Hunt modeled the chateau on French Renaissance castles that he and Vanderbilt visited together in Europe. Vanderbilt opened the doors to family and friends on Christmas Eve, 1895.

His descendants still own and run the estate today, more than 130 years later.

Banquet Hall, Biltmore House, Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC

The Banquet Hall ceiling soars 70 feet above you

Walking through the main rooms on a self-guided audio tour, you hit a point where the scale stops making sense in the best way. The Banquet Hall has a 70-foot ceiling, a triple fireplace, and a 1916 pipe organ.

The Library holds more than 10,000 books beneath a ceiling painting pulled from a Venetian palace.

A spiral walnut staircase connects the Library’s two levels, and somewhere behind a wall, a concealed passageway leads to the guest rooms.

The Grand Staircase spirals 107 steps around a four-story wrought-iron chandelier holding 72 bulbs.

Mr. Vanderbilt purchased these two paintings by Claude Monet. One is a landscape entitled Strada Romana à Bordighera. Monet captured this colorful Italian scene in 1884. In addition, Vanderbilt acquired a Monet seascape entitled Belle-Île, le chenal de Port-Goulphar, painted in 1886.

Renoir, Monet and a secret wartime vault

The house holds roughly 50,000 objects, and the art alone could fill a museum. Paintings by Renoir, Monet, John Singer Sargent and James Whistler hang throughout the rooms.

The 90-foot Tapestry Gallery displays three 16th-century Flemish tapestries depicting the Triumph of Virtue Over Vice.

During World War II, the National Gallery of Art quietly shipped its most valuable pieces here for safekeeping, including Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of George Washington.

The estate opened to the public in 1930, and people have been walking through ever since.

A bowling alley and indoor pool are hiding in the basement

Most visitors don’t expect a two-lane bowling alley in the basement.

There’s also a gymnasium and an indoor swimming pool that holds 70,000 gallons of water, one of the first in any private American home, with underwater electric lighting.

Three kitchens, walk-in refrigerators, a servants’ dining hall and laundry rooms kept the whole operation running.

The original stables near the house have since been converted into shops and a cafe, so you can take a break without leaving the property.

Italian Garden, Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina

Olmsted laid out 75 acres of gardens that change every season

Frederick Law Olmsted designed Central Park, and he designed the grounds here too. The 75 acres he laid out cover formal and informal gardens across all four seasons.

The Italian Garden runs reflecting pools filled with koi, water lilies and papyrus. The Azalea Garden goes wild with color in spring.

The Rose Garden holds hundreds of rose varieties, and the Walled Garden shifts its plantings with the calendar. A team of horticulturists works full time to keep Olmsted’s vision going.

Walled Garden Conservatory, Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC

More than 2,000 plants grow inside the glass-ceilinged Conservatory

At the back of the Walled Garden stands a glass-ceilinged Conservatory, completed in 1895, packed with more than 2,000 plants at any time. Orchids, palms, ferns and tropical blooms rotate through the space by season.

The Orchid Room alone holds more than 500 plants, with peak color through the winter months. In summer, hibiscus and bougainvillea take over.

Inside the main house, a hidden floor door once let staff move plants to and from the Conservatory without passing through guest areas.

Twenty-two miles of trails cut through forests, meadows and river banks

If you want to get outside, you have more than 22 miles of hiking and biking trails to work with.

The Deer Park Trail runs 1.3 miles from the house to the Lagoon, with long views back toward the mansion and out to the mountains. Guided horseback rides move through the estate’s woodlands and meadows.

Falconry, fly fishing, kayaking, river rafting, carriage rides and Land Rover driving experiences are all on the menu. Leashed dogs are welcome on every trail.

Biltmore Winery Storage Facility May 2017

America’s most-visited winery pours inside a converted dairy barn

Biltmore Winery opened in 1985 inside a converted dairy barn on the estate, and it has held the title of America’s most-visited winery since. Red, white, rosé and sparkling wines all come out of here.

A complimentary tasting of handcrafted wines comes with your estate admission, so you don’t need to budget extra for that first pour.

The estate grows grapes in its own vineyard on the west side of the property, and harvests go to the crush within hours of picking. Guided tours and premium tastings run for an added fee.

Antler Hill Village is a spot with some shops and restaurants as well as the Biltmore Estates Winery where we had a wine tasting.

Antler Hill Village brings the 1890s working estate to life

About two miles from the main house, Antler Hill Village gives you a ground-level look at how the estate actually worked.

The Farmyard lets you meet the animals, watch blacksmith demonstrations and get a sense of daily life in the 1890s. The Biltmore Legacy exhibit traces the Vanderbilt family’s life at home and on the road.

A children’s playground sits nearby for families with younger kids.

The Outdoor Adventure Center uses the village as its hub, so if you’re booking a trail ride or a rafting trip, this is where you check in.

Every weekend the Biltmore Estate has live music at the Winery's Arbor Grill. This Sunday, Christabel and the Jons, a Johnston City-based jazz combo, came over and provided their excellent sultry swing.

Projection lights and a live orchestra score transform the estate at night

Luminere debuted on March 26, 2026, the first outdoor evening experience in the estate’s 130-year history.

Created with experiential design studio Klip Collective, the show uses projection mapping, custom lighting and an original score recorded by the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, composed by Julian Grefe.

A self-guided route winds through seven illuminated areas: the house facade, the Italian Garden, the Conservatory and a treescape, among others.

Luminere runs on select evenings through Oct. 18, 2026, and requires a separate ticket from your estate admission.

Spring sends more than 100,000 flowers across the grounds

Late March through late May, the estate runs Biltmore Blooms, and the numbers behind it are worth noting.

More than 100,000 flowers spread across the property: tens of thousands of tulips, orchids and azaleas, plus elaborate floral arrangements inside the house itself.

The gardens were designed to peak in waves, so the landscape reads differently week to week.

The Azalea Garden and the Walled Garden hit their height during this stretch, and it’s one of the busiest times on the calendar. Go midweek if you can.
