Oklahoma
We Know You’re Not From Oklahoma If You Mispronounce These 12 Names
Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain—and so do confused tourists trying to pronounce our town names. With deep Native American roots, frontier flair, and a total disregard for phonetic consistency, this state was practically built to trip up outsiders. Say one wrong and someone in cowboy boots will correct you politely… then roast you at the cookout.
1. Miami (My-AM-uh, not My-AM-ee)
You’re not in Florida, friend. And we’re not here for palm tree pronunciation.
2. Chickasha (CHICK-uh-shay, not Chick-a-shaw)
It’s not a dance move. It’s a test—and you just failed it.
3. Tecumseh (Tuh-KUM-suh, not Tee-come-see)
Bonus points if you say it while pretending you’re not lost in the middle of the state.
4. Sayre (SAIR, not Sigh-er)
One syllable, one chance to not sound like a GPS voice glitch.
5. Cushing (CUSH-ing, not Coo-shing)
Oil country, strong opinions, zero patience for extra syllables.
6. Nowata (No-WAH-tuh, not No-water)
Trust us, they’ve heard that joke before. And they’re not laughing.
7. Tahlequah (TAL-uh-kwah, not Tah-lee-kway)
The capital of the Cherokee Nation and the capital of mispronunciations.
8. Eufaula (You-FAW-luh, not Oo-fall-ah)
Sounds elegant, feels local, confuses absolutely everyone.
9. Hobart (HOE-burt, not Hob-art)
Looks Australian. Sounds Okie.
10. Arapaho (Uh-RAP-uh-hoe, not Air-a-pay-ho)
Native name, Western twang, and no mercy for guesswork.
11. Quapaw (KWAH-paw, not Quap-awe)
It’s not a sound effect. It’s a tribe, a town, and a pronunciation challenge.
12. Oklahoma (Oak-luh-HOE-muh, not Oak-la-HAA-muh)
Say it like you’re singing the musical, or risk immediate state exile.
If you got them all right, congratulations—you’ve probably eaten fried okra at a gas station, yelled “Boomer!” unironically, and know how to survive a tornado warning with one eye on the sky and the other on the grill. If not, no worries—we’ll still treat you right. Just don’t say My-AM-ee unless you want someone’s meemaw to correct you with a sweet tea in one hand and a knowing smirk in the other. Welcome to Oklahoma—y’all better learn fast.
