It’s a river town with big plans

You drive into Pigeon Forge along a narrow valley in East Tennessee, and the Great Smoky Mountains fill every window.

The town runs about five miles along the Little Pigeon River, and somehow they’ve packed more than 10 million visitors a year into that stretch. The national park next door pulls in 12 million on its own.

Between the rides, the live shows, and a working gristmill from 1830, this valley has a lot going on. The mountains just stand there behind it all, watching.

From iron forge to family playground

For most of its history, fewer than 200 people lived here.

Pigeon Forge got its name from Isaac Love’s iron forge, built around 1817 on a river where flocks of passenger pigeons once roosted. Those birds are gone now.

The Old Mill went up in 1830, grinding grain for local farmers, and the community stayed small and quiet until the national park opened in 1934. Visitors started showing up.

The town was incorporated in 1961, and when Dolly Parton co-founded Dollywood in 1986, everything changed.

You get thrill rides, live music, Appalachian crafts, and food that wins awards.

The park runs seasonal festivals all year, from a spring flower festival through a summer celebration, fall’s Harvest Festival, and Smoky Mountain Christmas in winter.

Doors open mid-March and the season runs through early January.

Conde Nast Traveller named East Tennessee one of the 14 best places to visit in the U.S. in 2026, and this ride was a big reason why.

The Old Mill still grinds grain on the Little Pigeon River

The Old Mill has been running since 1830, and its waterwheel still turns on the Little Pigeon River, grinding corn, wheat and other grains the same way it did almost 200 years ago.

It’s the only structure in town on the National Register of Historic Places, listed since 1975. The flour and cornmeal ground here go straight to the Old Mill Restaurant next door.

Around the mill, you’ll find shops, a pottery studio, a candy kitchen and a creamery at Old Mill Square.
