The Best of Austin, TX Neighborhoods

Not everyone’s lucky enough to live in these gorgeous neighborhoods in Austin, TX, but you can still visit them. Who knows, they may actually be your zip code in the future. Fingers crossed.

Travis Heights

This historic neighborhood south of Lady Bird Lake feels like a secret garden.

Century-old pecan trees create natural tunnels over winding streets, while historic homes from the 1920s and 1930s show off unique architectural styles from Craftsman to Mediterranean Revival.

The neighborhood’s crown jewel is the peaceful Stacy Park, complete with natural swimming pools and walking trails. Despite being minutes from South Congress, it’s a popular culture spot.

The Travis Heights Art Trail, held every November annually, invites local artists to open their studios to the public so you can experience the creative spirit of the neighborhood firsthand.

Clarksville

As one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods, Clarksville packs in history and beauty into its compact streets. This former freedmen’s community west of downtown features an eclectic mix of restored Victorian-era homes and modern architectural masterpieces.

Local institutions like the Sweet Home Baptist Church, Fresh Plus grocery, and Jeffrey’s restaurant are historic jewels running through the tree-lined streets. The Clarksville Community Center hosts various events throughout the year, including potlucks.

Tarrytown

Nestled between Lake Austin and MoPac, Tarrytown represents Austin’s old-money elegance at its finest.

Massive heritage oaks shade sprawling estates and charming cottages, while Reed Park offers a natural escape with its limestone pools and hiking trails. Don’t miss the iconic Mayfield Park with its resident peacocks.

Right after, stop at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters’ lakeside deck for some of Austin’s best sunset views. This place’s been open since the 90s, a common venue for hosting Neighborhood Association Meetings.

Hyde Park

Austin’s first planned suburb. Victorian mansions and classic bungalows line streets shaded by towering elm trees in this historic neighborhood.

Local spots like Quack’s Bakery and Hyde Park Bar & Grill create a small-town feel in the heart of the city. The Elisabet Ney Museum, housed in the sculptor’s former studio, adds artistic flair to this already charming neighborhood.

Be part of the Texas Book Festival downtown this November, if you’re into literary arts. There’s gonna be author readings, panel discussions, and book signings at Hyde Park Theatre, a great way to support fellow authors.

Pemberton Heights

Perched on a hill overlooking downtown lies Pemberton Heights.

It showcases Austin’s finest historic architecture like Splitrock, one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood. Grand estates from the 1920s and 1930s sit on meticulously landscaped lots, while Pease Park provides a gorgeous natural border along Shoal Creek.

Get on top of the treehouse. Its elevation offers stunning downtown views, especially dramatic during sunset when the sky paints the Austin skyline in golden hues.

But it’s the holiday season you should experience. There are carriage rides across the streets filled with live music and the long-standing tradition of an annual Easter egg hunt ushers in a sense of community.

Zilker Park

The perfect blend of natural beauty and urban convenience, Zilker surrounds Austin’s crown jewel, Zilker Park. Charming bungalows and modern rebuilds share streets dotted with local coffee shops and restaurants.

It hosts the ABC Kite Festival, one of the oldest in the country, and a spring tradition for all age groups. The neighborhood offers direct access to the Barton Creek Greenbelt and Springs Pool, a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who don’t want to leave the city.

Mueller

This master-planned community shows how beautiful modern urban design can be. Built on the former airport site, Mueller features colorful rowhouses, lakes with hiking trails, and abundant green spaces.

The neighborhood’s commitment to sustainability shows in its solar panels and rain gardens help create a vibrant community feel. The Farmer’s Market is a dynamic space to pick up artisanal jams and handmade goodies.

Every Fall, the Mueller Lake Park Amphitheater hosts movie nights under the stars for the community to enjoy a relaxing evening outdoors.

Rosedale

Tucked between Burnet Road and Shoal Creek, Rosedale captures Austin’s laid-back beauty perfectly.

Ranch-style homes and updated bungalows sit on quiet streets shaded by ancient oak trees, while Ramsey Park serves as the neighborhood’s social hub. If you’re into marathons, join Rosedale’s Charity Bicycle Ride this Spring.

But if you just want to leave the crowds behind, local institutions like Fonda San Miguel and Upper Crust Bakery are excellent escape routes. Best for foodies who want out of the main street hustle.

Old West Austin

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Old West Austin blends architectural beauty with natural charm.

The neighborhood’s three districts – Old Enfield, Pemberton Heights, and Bryker Woods – from modest bungalows to grand estates. The area’s proximity to the Shoal Creek Greenbelt and Johnson Creek Trail adds natural beauty to the historic neighborhood.

One of the most unique experiences here is the Bat Festival, set against the backdrop of the stunning Congress Avenue Bridge. In May, hustle for treats at the Pecan Festival in the Sixth Street Historic District.

Barton Hills

Anybody who’s spent their New Year’s Eve here will know of the Polar Bear Splash: the age-old tradition of plunging into the 68-degree waters of Barton Springs Pool.

Bordered by the Barton Creek Greenbelt, this neighborhood combs through mid-century homes nestled into the hillsides. You’ll have access to some of the easiest nature trails in South Austin that lead to surprise vistas at every turn.

If you’re hiking Barton Hills in Spring, you might even run into participants from the Austin International Half Marathon. They make a pit stop here.
