This one is Arizona’s biggest claim to fame. People from all across the world travel to see this massive canyon that has been in the works for seventeen million years now. Extending nearly 300 miles long, eighteen miles wide, and a whole mile deep, it’s understandable why this attraction draws people to the great state of Arizona. When people come back from their Southwest vacation they always have Arizona photos that include the Grand Canyon.

People may come to see this breathtaking geological masterpiece, but they will soon learn that Arizona has a whole lot more to offer.

2) No Other State Could Make Rocks Look So Good

The Grand Canyon aside, Arizona has an incredible knack for creating awesome geological vistas. The list goes on and on: Antelope Canyon (both upper and lower, of course), the Superstition Mountains, the red rocks of Sedona… No matter where you turn, a breathtaking vista, often created millions of years ago by violent forces, is within view. Pictured above is the famous Monument Valley. Only in Arizona do you find towering masses of sandstone and shale that look suspiciously like a left and right mitten?

3) Sunsets In Arizona Are Unrivaled

Its a pretty well-known fact that, if sunsets are your jam, Arizona is the place to be. From deep in the desert, to the heart of the city, no matter where you travel, you’re bound to get a show. Each evening, the sky turns into a work of art, awash with vibrant pinks, reds, and purples. The clouds seem to assume never-before-seen shapes. Wherever you are in Arizona when the evening starts to fall, keep an eye on the sky and a camera handy because you’re sure to be in for a treat.

4) Saguaro Cacti Are Crazy Cool!

In terms of cacti, saguaros are arguably the coolest. What other cactus can you name that very slowly grows to be over seventy feet tall? And by very slowly, we’re talking like at least 150 years. Holy lifespan! As they age, saguaros grow arms that bend upward, sometimes as many as twenty-five over the course of their lifetime. If they’re well-hydrated, they can weigh more than two tons! All in all, they’re the biggest cactus in the United States, and you can generally only find them in the Sonoran desert of Arizona and Mexico. It’s a rare occurrence when someone shares their Arizona photos and they don’t include any that have saguaros in them.

5) Arizona Has a Lot of Diverse Desert Plant Life

Saguaros are pretty neat, but they’re far from all that Arizona has to offer. It’s a common misconception that nothing grows in Arizona because of the desert landscape. In fact, a ton of things grows in Arizona! The types of cacti are nearly endless: barrel, hedgehog, prickly pear, yucca… we could go on for days. And wildflowers are hardly rare either. Poppies, lilies, and daisies abound. Other plants you can find include Joshua trees, Juniper, and Creosote bushes, just to name a few. You’re never far from something blooming and beautiful in this state.

6) Wildlife in Arizona is Diverse Also

Just as plenty of plants call Arizona home, so too, do plenty of animals. These cute little guys are one among many! They’re sometimes called javelinas, peccaries or skunk pigs, and they’re a mammal that loves living in desert environments. From smaller animals like prairie dogs and jackrabbits to bigger animals like coyotes and bighorn sheep, Arizona is the perfect habitat for all types of wildlife. The desert provides a home for unique animals as well. Both horned toads and Gila monsters reside in this state!

7) Arizona Stays on the Sunny Side of Life
