Here Are 5 Of The Oldest Restaurants In North Carolina You Must Try

Ah the food industry, when we’re not in the mood to prepare ourselves a meal and deal with dishes, you’re there for us. In fact, restaurants in general have been there for us since 1765. These North Carolina restaurants may not date quite so far back, but you’re sure to be surprised by their history and delicious cuisine.

  1. Tavern In Old Salem

This national historic landmark doubles as a family run restaurant. It was built back in 1784 and expanded upon in 1816. During the day, the servers are dressed in historic Moravian apparel but at night, the lights are replaced by candles and locally farmed food is served in intimate dining rooms.

  2. The Riverboat Landing

Situated along the Cape Fear River in Historic Downtown Wilmington, the Riverboat Landing is a favorite among locals and newcomers alike. The history of the building dates back before the Civil War. Though the building has undergone remodeling, much of the original brick walls and architecture remain providing guests an incredible dining experience in the historic atmosphere. If you’re a party of two, make sure you reserve one of the nine private balconies overlooking the USS North Carolina Battleship.

  3. Harvey Mansion Restaurant and Historic Inn

Built in 1810, the Harvey Mansion Restaurant and Historic Inn is one of the last standing New Bern structures from the colonial city times. Before being restored and opened as a restaurant in February 2003, the Harvey was a boarding house and dormitory for New Bern Military Academy students.

  4. Carolina Coffee Shop

The Carolina Coffee Shop in Chapel Hill has been serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner since 1922. Don’t be fooled by the name, this coffee shop serves more than muffins and tea. Sandwiches, burgers, and Carolina BBQ are served at meal times before the restaurant transforms into a busy college bar at night.

  5. Mecca Restaurant

Situated on Martin St in Raleigh, is the historic Mecca Restaurant. The original Mecca opened in May 1930, but was relocated and expanded in 1937. Owners Nick and Helen relocated not only the restaurant name, but everything in it, including the original wood furniture! Mecca is now open late-night in addition to serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Growing up in various states along the east coast, I've developed a love of all things local. I currently live in North Carolina and wouldn't move for anything! I love the beach, animals, and creating my own adventures. I encourage everyone to travel and never be afraid to fail.
