There’s No House In The World Like This One In Arizona

The United States is home to plenty of unique structures, but few compare to this one of a kind house in Arizona. In Bisbee, Arizona, eighty miles from Tucson, you’ll find the Chulo Canyon Cave House, or simply the Cave House, as locals call it.

This home is nestled into the side of a granite boulder — its very own cave that was artificially created by mining engineers and plenty of ammonium nitrate. Even though it may be man-made, this cave home boasts all of the perks of living in a naturally occurring cave. Since the home extends over 2,000 square feet into the outcropping, it’s temperature never dips any lower than sixty six degrees Fahrenheit, and never rises above seventy two. Despite the fact that you’re in the heart of the Arizona desert, you should find it relatively easy to keep cool!

This impressive home is situated on thirty seven acres of land and covers 2,890 square feet of space. Of course that doesn’t include the space taken up by other buildings like the 890 square foot guest house, a separate library, workshop space, home office, and carport. You’ll find an eight person dining room, sunken living room, and even a cool sleeping loft with a spiral staircase. The inside offers a natural, earthy feel, with textured walls and rock ceilings. You might be wondering if the feeling of being tucked away underground might ever begin to bother you. Luckily, if that turns out to be the case, an all-glass sun room is on hand as a great place to not only relax and take in some Arizona sunshine, but also to observe the surrounding wildlife.

Despite it’s cave-like aesthetic, the house is in no way primitive. You’ll find more than one full bathroom, a commercial grade kitchen decorated in stainless steel and mosaic tiles, walk in closets, and a cool in-wall water seep where you can collect natural spring water. You’ll definitely want to explore the game room beneath the guest house and the secret safe room connected to the library — complete with bed, air conditioner, antique vault, and climate controlled gun safe. If you do feel like getting out of the house, luckily the fun doesn’t end there. There’s plenty to explore on the surrounding property as well.

The grounds of the cave house are covered with pools — an even more unique type of pools than you’re probably envisioning. Within walking distance, you’ll find a number of naturally occurring pools, fed by a nearby freshwater creek, that vary in size and number throughout the year. The farther you’re willing to walk towards the top of the mountain, the more choices you will have! You might be surprised when you stumble across a well-hidden hot tub that the owners had installed, too.

This incredible home was up for sale in 2012, with it’s price dropping from $3 million at first, to a steal at only $1.5 million. The owners stress how peaceful and relaxing the home is, and believe it would make an awesome yoga retreat or healing spa. Regardless, they know it will go to a non-traditional home buyer.
