These 9 Towns In New Mexico Have The Strangest Names You’ll Ever See

Published

on

Often the strangest town names are in places where there’s not much around. You know, the middle-of-nowheres that populate our vast and beautiful country. New Mexico is no exception to the strange town name epidemic. Here are 9 towns in New Mexico I think you’ll find to be quite strange.

1. Truth or Consequences

Well, the sign says it all. Truth or Consequences slightly contradict my first statement that towns with strange names are “middle-of-nowheres.” Truth or Consequences is well known throughout New Mexico and even has a famous haunted hospital!

2. Pep

Perhaps the most ironic of town names in world history is Pep, New Mexico. This was the best image I could find of this not-so peppy town!

3. Dusty

Dusty, New Mexico says it all; it’s dusty. And boy is it desolate. If Pep is the most ironic name of a town than Dusty is the most literal.

4. Chilili

About 30 minutes southwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico you can find the small 100 resident town of Chilili. Not chili; Chilili.

5. Flying H Ranch

It’s so small that it’s not really a town but instead a ranch. It’s actually quite a lovely place with lots to do. It even has its own Facebook page.

6. Weed

This little fixer-upper is exactly what I’d expect to find in a town called Weed. I also expect to find some good herbal supplements.

7. Organ

There isn’t much happening these days in good ol’ Organ. The name, however, comes from the Organ mountains that the Spanish explorers believed to resemble the instrument.

8. Pie Town

This image is of an old abandoned gas station in ruins. However, Pie Town is a place famous for pies. I’m not making this up. With a population of roughly 80 people and about 80 miles away from larger towns in all directions.

9. Toadlena

The small town of Toadlena is famous for one thing the most and that is this trading post pictured above. If you feel like trading or buying kitsch items to show your friends that there are indeed small towns in New Mexico like Toadlena, then stop by.
