Vermont
If You Don’t Know These 15 Words, You’re Definitely Not from Vermont
Vermont isn’t just a state—it’s a way of life powered by strong coffee, strong opinions, and stronger maple syrup. Outsiders think it’s all flannel and farmers’ markets (which… fair), but real Vermonters know how to survive mud season, black flies, and a 30-minute discussion on the merits of different sugaring methods.
These words aren’t just slang—they’re survival terms north of the Mason-Dixon line. If you don’t know them, you’re probably still trying to pronounce Montpelier correctly.
1. Flatlander
Anyone not from Vermont. Doesn’t matter if you’ve lived here ten years—you’re still a flatlander until proven otherwise.
2. Mud Season
That beautiful, miserable time between winter and spring when your car and soul get stuck in the same dirt road.
3. Creemee
That’s soft-serve ice cream to the rest of you—but richer, creamier, and basically holy. Maple is the only acceptable flavor.
4. The Kingdom
Short for the Northeast Kingdom. Wild, remote, and breathtaking—and yes, people really live there on purpose.
5. Maple Season
When every sugarhouse fires up, every Vermonter disappears into the woods, and the smell of boiling sap fills the air.
6. Sugar on Snow
Hot maple syrup poured over packed snow, served with a donut and a pickle. Sounds weird, tastes like heaven.
7. The Notch
A mountain pass, usually scenic and occasionally terrifying. If it’s closed for the winter, that’s your sign to turn around.
8. The Long Trail
A 272-mile hiking trail from Massachusetts to Canada. Completing it makes you a legend—or at least very tired.
9. The Green Mountains
Our backbone, our identity, and the reason we roll our eyes when people call Vermont “flat.”
10. The General Store
The social hub of every small town. Need hardware, a sandwich, or gossip? You’ll find all three here.
11. The Legislature
Our proud, part-time citizen legislature. Everyone knows at least one representative personally—it’s just how Vermont works.
12. The 802
Our one and only area code—and we like it that way.
13. Town Meeting Day
When Vermonters gather to argue, vote, and eat chili together. Democracy, but with baked goods.
14. The Big E
New England’s giant fair in Massachusetts. Vermonters pretend they don’t care—but everyone secretly goes.
15. Maple Creemee Stand
A summer landmark. If you don’t have a favorite one, you’re not local yet.
Vermont isn’t fancy—it’s authentic. It’s mud on your boots, frost on your beard, and a sense of humor stronger than your coffee. If you don’t know your creemees from your sugar on snow or still think “flatlander” sounds friendly, you’ve got a lot to learn.
But don’t worry—we’ll still pour you some syrup, hand you a flannel, and show you the best back road to get lost on. Just don’t come in March and expect pavement.
