Washington
12 Phrases You’ll Only Understand If You Live in Washington
Washington is where coffee is a personality trait, rain is a lifestyle, and flannel is always in season. From the hip streets of Seattle to the wide-open orchards of eastern Washington, folks here speak in a blend of outdoorsy enthusiasm, passive-aggressive politeness, and caffeine-fueled sarcasm. If you’ve ever sipped espresso in a kayak while wearing a Patagonia jacket you thrifted, you might just be a true Washingtonian.
1. “You want that wet or dry?”
We’re talking about your cappuccino, not the weather (though that question also applies there).
2. “It’s just a little mist.”
Translation: It’s pouring by anyone else’s standards, but we still don’t own umbrellas.
3. “I’m headed to the mountain.”
Could mean Rainier, Baker, Adams, St. Helens, or Hood. We won’t clarify. You’re supposed to know.
4. “Let’s take the ferry.”
A normal suggestion that somehow turns into a full-day saga involving seagulls, delays, and great views.
5. “That’s east of the mountains.”
Translation: it’s dry, it’s flat, and you’re probably voting red.
6. “You can see the mountain today!”
Which means it’s a clear day—one of about 12 per year. Rejoice.
7. “We don’t say pop. We say soda.”
Actually… no, wait. We say pop. But we’ll argue about it for 20 minutes.
8. “The Seahawks game starts at 1—everything else can wait.”
And yes, we still talk about the Super Bowl we should’ve won.
9. “This is from a local brewery.”
There are more craft breweries than Starbucks now. And yes, we’re very smug about it.
10. “I work in tech but I live in Tacoma.”
Because Seattle rent costs more than a second Tesla.
11. “Let’s hit Pike Place Market—but not on a weekend.”
Otherwise it’s wall-to-wall tourists with selfie sticks and fish flying over your head.
12. “You going camping or are you just dressed like that?”
Sometimes the difference is hard to tell. Bonus points if you also smell faintly of cedar and espresso.
If you read this while sipping cold brew in a North Face jacket and dodging a Subaru in a Whole Foods parking lot, congrats—you’re Washington through and through. If not, grab a cup of coffee, take a hike (literally), and learn to appreciate 43 different types of drizzle. You’ll be talkin’ Evergreen State in no time.
