White Sands National Park is the youngest national park in the country. But did you know about the Interdune Boardwalk, which walks you across the breathtaking panorama of natural all-white dunes and rich ecological heritage inside this park?

Truly Mesmerizing Landscape

As you set foot on the 0.4-mile boardwalk hike, you’re greeted by a mesmerizing landscape. The soft, white gypsum dunes create a stark contrast against the vivid blue sky and stretch as far as the eye can see. The gentle curves of the dunes, shaped by the winds of time, evoke a sense of tranquility and awe.

What to Expect

The boardwalk hike is designed to be accessible to visitors of all ages, fitness levels, wheelchairs, and pets. The well-maintained boardwalk ensures a comfortable trek so you focus on the beauty of your surroundings. Along the way, informative signs provide insights into the park’s geology, flora, and fauna, enriching your hiking experience.

Encounters with Wildlife

As you traverse the boardwalk, keep your eyes peeled for the park’s diverse wildlife. Desert-adapted plants dot the landscape, showcasing nature’s resilience in this arid environment. Lizards scurry among the dunes, birds soar gracefully overhead, and if you’re lucky, you might glimpse other desert dwellers like rattlesnakes. Remember to admire wildlife from a respectful distance to preserve their natural habitat.

You’ll also notice informative boards that talk about what species live here and how they have adapted to the white color and become much lighter than the other species worldwide. If you observe closely, you’ll even see their footprints—wow!

State’s Most Captivating Scenic Vistas

As you walk further, you’ll see small benches placed for you to sit and soak in the surreal beauty around you. Imagine watching the pastel colors of sunset around you, white sand reflecting those colors, and you just living in that moment – pure bliss!

In springtime, very vibrant colored flowers bloom along the boardwalk, making it a very otherworldly beauty but a must-see view. And the contrast on the white sands below makes it even more visually appealing.

But You Must Know This!

Before starting your adventure, stop at the park’s visitor center. Here, you can watch a 17-minute video that delves into the park’s history, showcasing its unique formation and the ecological significance of the gypsum sands. The video is an excellent introduction to the wonders you’ll encounter on the boardwalk hike.

Also, below, I’ve added some practical information for you so that you don’t have a bad experience there:

Operating Hours:

White Sands National Park is open varying hours depending on the season. Check the official park website.

Entrance Fees:

While there is an entrance fee to access the park, which is $25, certain passes, such as the America the Beautiful Pass, are accepted. Be sure to check the park’s website for the latest fee information.

Parking:

Ample parking is available at designated areas near the boardwalk trailhead. During peak visitation times, especially in spring and fall, arriving early to secure parking is recommended.

Sun Protection:

Since there is minimal shade and you are basically under the sun all the time, wearing protective clothing like long sleeves, leggings, and a hat with sunglasses is a must. The sun reflects off the white sand, making it really bright for your eyes.

Food and Drinks:

Bring plenty of water and foods like picnic foods as there’s no food inside the park. Also, bring colorful forks, spoons, plates, etc. that even if the wind gushes them, you can easily see it in the white sand and throw it in the trash can. Plus, there are some picnic benches near the entrance that are shaded, so you can sit there and enjoy your little picnic.

And especially on the boardwalk, bring at least 1 liter of water, as it can make you thirsty quickly.

Weather Considerations:

White Sands National Park experiences diverse weather conditions throughout the year. Summers are hot, with temperatures exceeding 100°F (37°C), while winters can be chilly, especially during the evening hours.

Worst Time To Hike

May to Aug is the hottest time of the year here. So, if you do wish to come along these month be sure to bring plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun, as there’s minimal shade.

July to September is the monsoon season, and it rains almost every day. Even if there’s no rain, lightning storms build up, and it can get a bit scary.

Best Time To Hike

Nov – Feb are the coldest month, and if you wish to visit, bring extra clothes as the temperature drops quickly to below freezing.

End of Feb to May is springtime, which I think is the best time to enjoy pleasant weather in the White Sands National Park. But it’s also very windy, afterall the natural winds are what make the oh-so-beautiful dunes.
