This May 8, Friday, the Commemorative Air Force shall conduct a flyover across parts of both the East and West Valley. The historic warbird flyover is a symbol of the enduring spirit as it marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The VE Day Flyover honors the Victory in Europe Day which celebrates the end of World War II. The historical event that took place on May 8, 1945, saw the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany armed forces’ unconditional surrender.

In addition, the flyover serves another purpose. It shall also salute the fighting spirit and enduring strength of all Arizonans throughout history. According to CAF Airbase Arizona, this includes a strong sense of purpose and camaraderie while dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

There will be a formation of three large aircraft that will launch from Falcon Field in Mesa at 8:20 a.m. The formation will include a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell Bomber, and C-47 Skytrain, all of which have strong wartime connections to Arizona. The said aircraft also flew service in World War II.

The B-17 Flying Fortress was a heavy bomber bristling with armament. On the other hand, the B-25 Mitchell Bomber is a maid in the shade and is already a veteran of 15 combat missions. Last but not the least, the C-47 Skytrain basically has the World War II spirit, because it has seen more combat than any other known aircraft in the CAF.

It will form-up to head West over central Mesa, then to south metro, west valley, north metro, and the east valley. After that, the route will take the aircraft over the Mesa Cemetery where U.S. and British are buried, as well as the State Capitol over the USS Arizona monument. Finally, the formation will soon be seen above the National Cemetery, including several communities around the area.

The entire route of the VE Day Flyover is expected to take about an hour. Take a look at the table below to get an idea as to where you can see the flyover. Remember that this is just an approximate schedule.

If you can still remember, the Luke Air Force Base also did a flyover in honor of all the people who continue to do their jobs amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The previous flyover, which took place last May 1, took the aircraft through most Valley cities.
