Lawrence, whose work is most known as the “Forbidden Art” collection. The collection consists of nine controversial oil paintings that were confiscated by police in 1929 from the Dorothy Warren Gallery in London. At the time, the artist’s reputation was bombarded with negative publicity because early 20th century Victorian England viewed him as a rebel or spokesman for sexual freedom. His work was deemed obscene and was even banned in London. He only saved them from the danger of being destroyed when he agreed to remove them from the English soil – never to be returned.
